Between a busy class schedule, a bustling social life and extracurriculars, many college students put cleaning their apartments on the bottom of their to-do list. Having a tidy home-base is not only visually pleasing, but will decrease your stress and allow you to study in your room without a problem (not to mention your parents will be thrilled when they come to visit). The biggest issue that college students face with cleanliness of their space is they let it pile up, so it’s important to stay on top of it.

Here are a few tips on how to keep your apartment nice and tidy:

1. Pick one day a week to deep clean

Every college student needs to own the cleaning basics: a vacuum, some cleaning product, and a duster. Vacuuming, dusting, and wiping everything off once a week can make a huge improvement, while also getting rid of pesky dust-mites that can make you sick! A deep clean includes putting clutter where it belongs, and using cleaning product to keep your apartment germ/dust free. Deep cleaning your bathroom is exceptionally important as it is a hub for germs & grime.

2. Pick a laundry day

Often it’s easiest to do this on your deep clean day, but designate one day to do your laundry each week. This also means washing your sheets & towels regularly. This will help you be more organized & your laundry basket won’t be overflow.

3. Spot clean

As mentioned earlier, keeping your place clean throughout the week. Some simple tasks to do daily/as needed: take the trash out, wipe off the counter, make the bed, etc. Staying on top of the small things makes that deep clean day so much easier!

4. If you have a roommate…

Take turns cleaning the common areas & be courteous of each other. Always clean up your things in common spaces, because this will avoid unnecessary, yet common roommate issues that many people face.

5. Clean where you eat

Do your dishes daily! Avoid leaving food and dirty plates all over your counter. Not only is it unsanitary, it can be bothersome to a roommate. A good rule of thumb is to always wash your dishes/put them in the dishwasher by the end of the day.

6. Keep a basic stash of cleaning products

Keeping a stash of window cleaner, something to dust with, toilet cleaner and a disinfectant is something that will make your cleaning process so much easier. A helpful and cost-effective alternative is creating some of your own cleaning products. Google recipes and there's likely to be a cheap substitute to your favorite cleaning product that you can make at home!

7. Once a semester, purge your apartment

This might be a way to earn some extra cash! Each semester, going through clothes that don't fit/you don't wear can create so much space in your closet, and you can sell those clothes to consignment. Another way to stay organized and clean is to throw out things you don’t use or that are broken. This may seem like an obvious tip, but many people push things to the side insisting it’ll be of some use or they’ll fix it. Minimizing junk in your apartment will make your life a lot easier.

Keep these 7 easy tips in mind and integrate them into your weekly schedule. Keeping your apartment tidy not only makes it look good, but it’ll make you feel good too.
